Alexander Afenyo-Markin Biography

Alexander Afenyo-Markin is a Ghanaian lawyer and a politician belonging to the New Patriotic Party. He is the member of parliament for Effutu Constituency in the Central region.

He was born Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin on May 27, 1978.

He obtained his LLB/Mgt at the University of Buckingham between 2003 to 2006. From there, he went to the Ghana School of Law between 2007 to 2009 where he received a Barrister at Law certificate.

Alexander Afenyo-Markin also holds an MA in International politics and security studies at the University of Bradford.

He worked as a Principal Postal Officer at the Ghana Post Company Limited  between 1999 and 2003. He also worked at the Excel Courier Ghana Limited as the Director from 2004 to 2011.

As a barrister, Alexander was an Associate at Dahenya Chambers from 2010 to 2016.

He first became an MP for Effutu constituency in 2013 after winning at the parliamentary elections at the 2012 elections against the NDCs Mike Allen Hammah. President Nana Addo appointed him as the Chairman of Ghana Water Company Ltd (GWCL) in 2017.

He is currently the Deputy Majority leader of the 8th parliament of the 4th Republic.

Afenyo Markin launched The One Teacher, One Laptop initiative in 2018 which aims at making sure every teacher in his constituency owns a laptop to aid in their teaching. He donated 100 laptops on the day of the launch to teachers within his constituency and another 40 in 2021 to newly posted teachers in his constituency.

In all, about 1000 laptops have been donated to teachers of both public and private schools in the Effutu constituency.

Alexander Afenyo-Markin is the vice chairperson of the Appointments committee and vice chairperson of the Business committee. He is also a member of the Finance, Standing Orders, Defence and Interior and Committee of Selection committees.
