Ghana Institute of Journalism Entry Requirements

This is a comprehensive detail of the entry requirements for Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ). GIJ is a premier university for media and communication training in Ghana and for that matter receives thousands of applications each year but can only admit so much.

Many a times people are of the perception that it is normally students with bad grades who attend Ghana Institute of Journalism. However, this is entirely not true and must be disregarded.

(a) Diploma In Communication Studies 

  • SSSCE HOLDERS
    Applicants must possess at least six (6) passes (A-D) in all subjects which includes English and Mathematics. Must pass in three relevant subjects for area of specialization.
  • WASSCE HOLDERS; A WASSCE holder must possess six (6) passes (A1-D7) in all subjects including English and Mathematics. Must also possess a minimum of C6 in any three (3) of the passes relevant to the area of specialisation.
  • MATURE STUDENTS (Who can apply?)
    Persons wishing to enter GIJ as Mature Students must be at least 25 years old. Applicant must also show proof of age with birth certificate or any legitimate documentary. A proof of date of birth which is at least 5 years old at the time of application. Mature applicants will be considered after passing a special entrance examination in English Language, Mathematics and Aptitude Test/general paper conducted by the University.

NOTE: Applicants will be selected based on a competitive cut-off point for the year.
Candidates awaiting results are eligible to apply.

(b) B. A Communication Studies 

  • SSSCE HOLDERS
    Applicants must possess passes (A – D) in six (6) subjects. This must comprise three (3) core subjects; ie. English, Mathematics and three (3) elective subjects with an overall aggregate of 24 or better.
  • WASSCE HOLDERS
    Applicants must possess passes(A1-C6) in six (6) subjects. This must comprise three (3) core subjects; ie. English, Mathematics and three (3) elective subjects with an overall aggregate of 36 or better.
  • GCE ADVANCED LEVEL HOLDERS

Applicants must possess a General Certificate of Examinations (GCE) ‘A’ Level Grade E or better in three (3) subjects. At least, one of which should be Grade D or better Credit passes i.e. Grade 6 or better in five (5) GCE Ordinary Level (‘O” Level) subjects including English, Mathematics and a Science subject, for non-science students.

  • DIPLOMA HOLDERS
    GIJ Diploma holders with a CGPA of 1.79 and below can apply to be admitted to level 200.
  • MATURE STUDENTS (Who can apply?).
    Persons wishing to enter the Ghana Institute of Journalism as Mature Students must be at least 25 years old. Applicant will be required to show proof of age with birth certificate or any legitimate documentary. A proof of date of birth which is at least 5 years old at the time of application.

NB: A special entrance examination in English Language, Mathematics and Aptitude Test /General paper will be conducted for mature applicants by the institute. Admission will be given to only applicants who pass this entrance exams.

(c) Level 300 Top Up 

(Weekend Session- Saturday and Sunday)

  • A GIJ Diploma with a final CGPA of 2.5 and above or an equivalent Diploma from an accredited communications’ training institution with a CGPA of 3.0 and above or with an average of Grade B. However, an applicant with a GIJ Diploma with a final CGPA between 1.80-2.49 or an equivalent Diploma from an accredited communications training institution could be considered for a fee-paying option.
  • Diploma holders with a Final Grade Point Average of 3.00 from the following disciplines: Archival Studies, Public Administration, Social Administration, Education and Management Studies are eligible to apply.
  • Higher National Diploma (HND) holders with a minimum of 2nd Class (Lower Division) in the following: Marketing, Information Technology, Secretaryship and Management Studies, as well as Social Science and Humanities related programme not mentioned here, are also eligible to apply.
  • Final Year Diploma students are eligible to apply as awaiting results applicants. (Certificates and Transcripts should, however, be provided to complete the application process)

(d) International Students

International applicants who hold equivalent qualifications are eligible to apply for any of the programmes. However, applicants should have their certificates and/or qualifications verified by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) before they can be admitted. Additionally, applicants from non-English speaking countries must meet a minimum level of English Language proficiency

(e) Postgraduate 

PROGRAMMES; I) M. A in Journalism

II) M. A in Public Relation

III) M.A in Media Management

IV) M. A in Development Communication

     REQUIREMENT 

International students who hold equivalent qualifications are eligible to apply for any of the programmes.

However, certificates and/or qualifications of applicants must be verified by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) before they can be admitted. Additionally, applicants from non-English speaking countries must meet a minimum level of English Language proficiency
