University Of Ghana Legon Diploma Courses.

Ghana’s premier university, University of Ghana Legon is one of the top public universities in Africa founded in 1948. 

University of Ghana Legon receives thousands of applications each year but can only admit so much. It is however necessary for prospective applicants to know the various courses offered at UG and their requirements to stand a better chance of being admitted.

In this article, we focus only on the diploma and certificate courses offered in University of Ghana.

Below are the list of diploma courses offered at University of Ghana Legon;

  • Public Administration
  • Accounting
  • Archives Administration
  • Social Administration

  • Librarianship
  • General Agriculture
  • General Music
  • Medical Laboratory Technology
  • Adult Education

NB: General Agriculture and Statistics are offered on modular basis.

GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS 

applicants must satisfy the following minimum requirements

Certificate

Applicant must have passes in all four Core subjects and any two Electives at the WASSSCE or its equivalent.

Diploma

  • Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations
    Passes in all core subjects i.e. Core English, Core Mathematics, Core Science/ Integrated Science, Core Social Studies/Life Skills and any two electives at a minimum of grade E.
  • Competitive Entrance Examination

Firstly, Candidates applying to Certificate and Diploma programmes shall, in addition to (i) or (ii) above, be required to pass a competitive Entrance Examination conducted by the University of Ghana, and an interview (where prescribed by the Department).

FACULTY/ DEPARTMENTAL REQUIREMENTS 

Certificate Programmes 

  • Proficiency In English Language 

It is 2-semester programme provided for foreign students for whom English is neither a first nor a second language. A Baccalaureate or its equivalent is required.

  • Statistics

The Certificate in Statistics is a 2-semester programme for candidates with proven competence in Mathematics and English.

Diploma Programmes

  • Accounting

The Diploma in Accounting is a 4-semester programme for candidates whose qualifications may include five credits at GCE ‘O’ Level.

Candidates who do not have ‘O’ Levels but have passed the Intermediate Examination of the Sub-Professional Accountancy Training Scheme organized by the Audit Service, or Stage III of the Ghana Commercial Examination, may be considered. A minimum of 3 years working experience is required of each candidate.

  • Adult Education

The Diploma in Adult Education is a 4-semester programme for candidates who in addition to satisfying the general requirements should have a good general work experience of not less than three years.

  • General Music

The Diploma in General Music is a 4-semester programme for persons with proven competence in the theory of Music up to at least GCE ‘O’ Level/SSSCE.

  • Librarianship/Archives Administration

The Diploma in Librarianship/Archives Administration is a 4-semester programme. Candidates should be in regular employment in appropriate institutions and must have been working for at least one year in such institutions at the time of registration.

  • Medical Laboratory Technology

The Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology is a 4-semester programmme following successful completion of the Ministry of Health Certificate for Medical Laboratory Technicians.

In addition to the prescribed basic qualifications, applicants must possess the Ministry of Health Certificate for Medical Laboratory Technicians and must have at least 3 years working experience.

• The National Diploma Programmes in Agriculture

These are 4-semester programmes for candidates aspiring for semi-professional roles in Agriculture/Home Science. The Agriculture programmes offers specialization options in General Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering, Animal Health and Post-Harvest Technology.

The programmes are for persons who have obtained the requisite diplomas of recognized institutions of the Ministries of Agriculture/Education/Health. Also, applicant must have been working for at least three years subsequent to obtaining the diploma.

In the case of Home Science, Post-Harvest Technology and Animal Health applicants must have qualified for study leave with their employers.

  • Public Administration

The Diploma in Public Administration is a 4-semester programme for candidates whose qualifications may include two passes at GCE ‘A’ Level. A minimum of 3 years working experience is required of each candidate.

  • Statistics

The Diploma in Statistics is a 2-semester programme following the Certificate course in Statistics. Candidates must therefore have obtained the Certificate in Statistics or its approved equivalent.

  • Social Administration

The Diploma in Social Administration is a 4-semester training programme in Social Work for mature persons who have relevant working experience. Candidates must be sponsored by their organisation.

NB: All applicants must be wary of fraudsters as the University of Ghana Legon DOES NOT RUN any preparatory courses towards the entrance examination. Lastly, the University has also NOT AUTHORIZED anyone to run such programmes.
